BioTrace4Leather: The Project that wants to value leather
BioTrace4Leather Project, developed by CeNTI, in partnership with CTIC - Centro Tecnológico das Indústrias do Couro and the company Curtumes Aveneda, aims to research and develop innovative sustainable systems of biological origin to defect minimization and leather traceability.
In practice, based on the concept of Circular Economy, the aims were to create protein-based filling agents and markers from the extraction of different protein fractions, obtained from residues and by-products of the tanning industry, such as collagen and gelatine, and dairy industry, such as whey.
Processes for incorporating the new filling agents into the leather to minimize defects and markers for traceability were also developed, which guarantee the achievement of improved leather, namely the maintenance of its natural appearance, as well as its technical characteristics.
The BioTrace4Leather Project is co-funded by Portugal 2020 under the Competitiveness and Internationalization Operational Program (COMPETE 2020) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
