CeNTI creates sensor for masks that monitor breathing rhythm
CeNTI is developing a sensor that, incorporated in a protection mask, will monitor its user's breathing rhythm and identify possible changes and deviations from standard patterns.
With this information, it will be possible to act quicker in case of contamination by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. This equipment, which is expected to be on the market by the end of the year, is another CeNTI initiative to help society fight the disease spread.
The innovation involves the development and integration, in the mask, of a disposable sensor, through which the user's respiratory rhythm will be monitored. The data collected by this sensor will be sent to a mobile application, that will detect any deviations in the results. The results can then be sent to health professionals for a deeper analysis of the results.
In the first phase, the sensor that is being developed by CeNTI will be incorporated in masks produced by OLDTRADING, an entity collaborating with the Project and a specialist in the textile sector. But, according to the Project managers, the system may also be coupled with other types of masks.
The Academic Clinical Center – 2CA-Braga is also part of the Project, responsible for carrying out evaluation tests regarding the performance and usability of the technological solution.
Reported by the Portuguese economic Newspaper Dinheiro Vivo, this project is funded by FCT- Foundation for Science and Technology under the program “RESEARCH4COVID-19”, an exceptional financing line to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic.
