Nature at the service of technology for a more sustainable future

Focused on the Circular Economy and sustainability, CeNTI cooperated to create technical textiles solutions using vegetable solid waste and subproducts from the animal leather and dairy industry. Stimulating the creation and the use of sustainable and innovative products was the main objective.

TexBoost – Circular Economy (PPS5 – AN1)
Textile solutions based on solid vegetable waste

Integrated into TexBoost Project, a new generation of textile solutions was developed, using solid waste and plant subproducts. This innovation aimed to obtain a leather alternative to natural and/or synthetic leather. This technology meets current consumer trends related to ethically and environmentally sustainable attitudes and promotes the creation and use of ecological products in the most diverse areas: techno fashion, eco-design, clothing, decoration, home textiles, footwear, fashion accessories, among others. In this nuclear activity, CeNTI was responsible for the mechanical adequacy of the plant residues explored to the technical requirements of the downstream coating process. It also worked on improving light fastness of the sustainable leather solutions.

TexBoost – Circular Economy (PPS5 – AN2)
A new generation of animal and EVA-based products

The use of leather and EVA subproducts was the starting point for the creation of a new generation of innovative textiles solutions, with multifunctional properties. For this, residues and subproducts obtained from industrial operations, such as tanning, leather cut (for automotive interior trim), and EVA (for footwear components) industries.
In this research, CeNTI was responsible for mechanical adequacy of leather and granular EVA residues, supplied by the copromotor leader, to the technical requirements of the downstream coating process, as well as for improving light fastness of the developed finishing/coatings. Given the physical and thermal characteristics of EVA residue, CeNTI developed different thermoplastic composites through sustainable coating technologies (coating extrusion) in textile substrates, resulting coated textile solutions with potential application in decorative and clothing products.

TexBoost – Circular Economy (PPS5 – AN3)
Textiles that born from solid waste and dairy industry subproducts

Research and develop a new generation of smart textiles solutions, based on dairy industry’s waste and subproducts was another challenge for CeNTI and the entities that were part of this nuclear activity. Corresponding to ethical, environmental, and sustainability issues were the main concepts of these new product creations with smart characteristics and functionalities. In this scope, in addition to technical coordination, CeNTI developed, produced, and characterized all textile finishing formulations based on dairy industry subproducts, both in their original form and microparticles' form. Also, the Centre created a sensory panel, where volunteers were trained to evaluate and validate technological solutions.
