SRS – Smart Roofs System
Smart Roofs System, a co-promotion project, aims to develop an advanced waterproofing system for roofs with thermal reflectance capability, whose objective is to respond to the problems of cracking and reduced durability of water-based polymeric liquid membranes, in order to perform technically equivalent or superior results to the solvent-based ones existing in the current market.
This system will consist of a water-based polymeric membrane with infrared reflector additives, reinforced with an intelligent textile substrate with coupled humidity sensing and regulation, and with acceleration of the curing process by active heating, in order to obtain, through the combination of materials and technologies, an innovative and distinct solution aimed at the demanding global construction market.
To ensure the project's success, a multidisciplinary consortium with complementary skills was defined with 2 business entities – Saint-Gobain Portugal, SA (Lead Promoter) and Têxteis Penedo, SA and 3 ENESII entities – ITECONS, CITEVE and CENTI that allow, with based on their areas of competence, guarantee the competences needed in the different areas of project development and answer to the proposed challenge.
Main goals
The main goals of the Smart Roofs System project are:
1. R&D of waterproofing and reflectance membrane;
2. R&D of the mortar Base layer;
3. R&D of reinforcing textile structure;
4. R&D of moisture system sensing and regulation systems (active curing process and regulation over time);
5. R&D of the integration process of active systems in the textile structure;
6. R&D of global integration of solutions, validation reengineering and process optimization.

Results
Along the project, an advanced thermal reflective waterproofing system will be developed, consisting of an aqueous polymer-based membrane reinforced with an intelligent textile substrate with coupled humidity sensing and active heating, comprising:
- Base layer mortar;
- Reinforcement textile structure;
- Waterproofing and reflectance membrane;
- Humidity system sensing and regulation systems (active curing process and regulation over time).
