Pacto da Bioeconomia Azul
Blue Bioeconomy Pact supports a new sustainable, innovative, and decarbonizing paradigm, which finds in the sea an answer to the challenge of global scarcity of land resources. This Pact bring together various national industries and aims to develop new products, processes and services resulting from the incorporation of blue bioeconomy goods into new or existing value chains, with a positive impact on the environment, in consumers life and in national exports.
The Agenda will invest in 7 sectors, through application of biomaterials, new paradigm for bivalve production, marine-based textiles, sustainability in food sector, increased algae production, circular feeding solutions, bioinformatics for fisheries sector, and in 3 transversal initiatives aimed at accelerating the development and commercialization of products and services in the sector: the Portuguese Blue Biobanks network, the digital platform for valorization of marine co-products, and promotion of growth and internationalization of companies and SMEs.
Main Goals/Activities
The investment foreseen in this Agenda aims to:
- Boost the development of a state-of-the-art industrial economic sector, based on the application of marine bioresources to multiple industries;
- To be the first major sample of the cross-cutting and ecological potential of marine biotechnology solutions;
- Contribute to positioning Portugal in the global context, as a pioneer in a sector that is estimated to reach €200 billion globally in 2030;
- To materialize the great opportunity for growth and innovation of marine industries (aquaculture, fisheries, canneries) and differentiation from traditional Portuguese industries that are currently unconnected to the sea (textiles, cork, fertilizers, human health).
For such, 7 industrial verticals are defined, referred to as Work Packages (WPs), related with Biomaterials (WP1), Bivalves (WP2), Textiles (WP3), Food (WP4), Algae (WP5), Feed (WP6), Fish (WP7).
CeNTI has a strong participation in the Textile Vertical (WP3), being actively involved in the use of marine litter collected in the ocean, such as unused fishing nets, and macro/microalgae, to produce environmental-friendly fabrics and knits for clothing and footwear industries, as well as add value and differentiation to the final product, by using macro/microalgae in dyeing and finishing processes of fabrics/knits.
