AeroCare

Advanced and sustainable dressing materials for chronic wound applications

AeroCare focuses on the development of innovative solutions for the treatment of chronic wounds, one of the major global public health challenges. The project aims to develop smart and dynamic dressings that combine high-performance textile structures with bioactive aerogels produced through 3D printing technologies.

These devices integrate bacteriophages, natural antimicrobial agents for the effective control of bacterial biofilms, as well as colorimetric biosensors capable of non-invasive monitoring of parameters such as pH and temperature. This approach enables the early detection of infections and contributes to reducing the frequency of dressing replacement.

Beyond the expected impact on clinical management and patients’ quality of life, AeroCare promotes technology transfer, the development of advanced materials, and solutions aligned with the principles of sustainability and circular economy within the Northern Portugal–Galicia Euro-region.

Main Goals/Activities

  • Hybrid Medical Devices: Development of smart dressings through the combination of advanced textile structures with 3D-printed bioactive aerogels.

  • Next-Generation Antimicrobial Therapy: Control of infectious biofilms through the incorporation of bacteriophages, promoting infection reduction and tissue regeneration.

  • Smart In Situ Monitoring: Integration of colorimetric biosensors for the non-invasive monitoring of parameters such as pH and temperature, enabling wound monitoring without dressing removal.
  • Advanced Manufacturing and Sustainability: Application of 3D bioprinting and supercritical fluid technologies, ensuring the integrity of biological agents and efficient resource use.

  • Cross-Border Cooperation and Circular Economy: Strengthening collaboration between Northern Portugal and Galicia by promoting industrial solutions aligned with digitalisation and environmental sustainability.

  • Clinical Impact and Quality of Life: Contribution to reducing morbidity and healthcare burden through fewer dressing replacements and prevention of infection-related complications.
