Integrated Technologies for Emerging Contaminant Detection and Removal

The AquaGuard project aims to develop a modular station for the real-time detection and removal of priority emerging contaminants, including PFAS, pesticides, pharmaceuticals and microplastics.

The solution integrates highly sensitive and selective electrochemical and optical sensors, combined with innovative electrochemical processes for the treatment of contaminated water. The system is complemented by a digital platform for monitoring, management and predictive data analysis, based on machine learning algorithms, enabling the identification of contamination patterns, the anticipation of variations in water quality and the early detection of critical events, while supporting real-time response and decision-making. Aligned with Directive (EU) 2020/2184, the AQUAGUARD system will be validated in the Cávado River as a representative case study of different anthropogenic pressures.

Through this integrated and decentralised approach, the project aims to deliver a pioneering solution for the continuous and in situ monitoring of emerging contaminants, complementing conventional laboratory methods. The success of AQUAGUARD will position this technology as a reference solution in the European smart water quality monitoring market.
