Innovative Sensors for the Digitalisation of Aquaculture

The SENSIMARINE project aims to develop an innovative solution to support the digital transition of aquaculture production processes for fish and bivalves, contributing to animal welfare, optimised data management, increased productivity and reduced environmental impact.

The solution encompasses the development of sensors for the continuous and real-time monitoring of water quality parameters and biological indicators relevant to aquaculture production. The project also includes the development of an integrated sensing system, based on microfluidic technology, applicable to intensive aquaculture systems, such as trout, seabream, seabass, sole and turbot, as well as extensive bivalve production systems.

The system also incorporates traceability solutions for cages in extensive production regimes, complemented by a digital data management platform and predictive algorithms and models to support decision-making in aquaculture.

SENSIMARINE

Main Goals/Activities

  • Develop systems for the continuous and real-time monitoring of water quality parameters, including temperature, pH, salinity and dissolved oxygen, in intensive and extensive aquaculture systems.
  • Develop systems for the continuous and real-time monitoring of biologically relevant parameters, including bromide, chlorophyll-a and cortisol.
  • Develop traceability solutions for bivalve production cages in extensive production regimes.

  • Develop algorithms and predictive models to support decision-making and optimise aquaculture production.

  • Develop an integrated monitoring system based on a microfluidic platform for the acquisition and management of water quality and biological parameter data.
