RDP Internacional highlights therapeutic innovation for lymphoedema treatment
The renowned programme "Isto faz-se por cá" from RDP Internacional – Portuguese radio station – presented an innovative Portuguese device for the treatment of lymphoedema, a chronic disease that affects up to 40% of women following breast cancer.
The episode focused on a smart orthopaedic sleeve, developed specifically for this treatment, which incorporates pneumatic actuators and polymer inflatable chambers designed to simulate manual lymphatic drainage. This solution contributes to reducing swelling and improving patient mobility.
The device allows users to carry out therapy sessions at home, autonomously and without the need for continuous supervision by a healthcare professional. It also enables pressotherapy sessions.
Additionally, a mobile application has been developed for the scheduling and management of therapy sessions. The app records data such as applied pressure, session duration, and number of repetitions, among others, enabling the medical team to monitor the progress of the treatment. The sleeve, which can be used in both home and hospital settings, will be prescribed by specialised healthcare professionals.
This innovation was developed within the framework of the Mobilising Agenda HfPT – Health from Portugal, a national Project that aims to position the country as a global reference hub for the design, development, and production of advanced solutions for the health market.
The Project, in which CeNTI is a member of the consortium, is funded by the European Commission's Recovery and Resilience Facility.
