UAV-GG: Innovative unmanned aerial vehicles for monitoring greenhouse gases

UAV-GG aims to revolutionise environmental technologies with a significant impact on the aeronautics sector through disruptive innovation.

Led by an international consortium, UAV-GG intends to transform the monitoring of greenhouse gases (GHG) through the use of long-range Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with advanced sensors.

The data collected by these vehicles, as well asin-field measurements (both provided by the Canadian company Romaeris) will be combined with satellite data (supplied by the company Spacebel, Belgium). This integration will enhance and enrich existing dataset, overcoming the limitations of satellite-only detection and enabling the creation of an accurate, detailed, three-dimensional view of large-scale GHG  distribution.

This innovative approach will enable the identification of emission sources, support more informed decision-making, and significantly enhance the global understanding of GHS behaviour.

As a Project's partner, CeNTI together with the Portuguese company Castros will focus on optimising the flight efficiency and energy autonomy of the UAVs. In this context, a modular and autonomous charging platform will be developed, exploring solutions such as second-life batteries and the integration of photovoltaic panels into the wings. Advanced electronic systems will also be implemented to ensure efficient management of all subsystems.

This represents an important step toward enhancing global knowledge of GHG emissions, supporting more sustainable decisions, and making the aeronautics sector greener.

UAV-GG is an international Project gathering entities from Canada, Belgium, and Portugal. The national consortium is composed of CeNTI and the Portuguese company Castros - Iluminações Festivas.
